About
As far back as I can remember, I was holding some sort of drawing tool in my hand. Whether it was a marker when I was in elementary school, a pen in middle school, a palette knife in high school, or a whiteboard marker in college, I can't recall a time that I wasn't making art. Now, I hold a paintbrush and create acrylic and gouache landscape paintings.
Throughout that time, I dreamt of pursuing many different careers. I'd become a veterinarian, a marine biologist, or maybe a wildlife photographer. Many of these were short lived dreams, but the one that really seemed to stick was running an art business. When I imagined painting for a living, it didn't feel like a job, it felt like something I had to do.
And then something unexpected happened, I discovered something that sparked the same feeling as being an artist did: Teaching. I recently graduated with my degree in Elementary Education and half of a studio art major (they didn't offer a minor) and am currently looking for my own elementary school classroom.
At first, the idea of balancing two passions that felt like they were at odds with each other felt daunting. But then I realized that it wasn't a question of "can I make this work" it was a question of "how will I make this work". Because truthfully, I can't have one without the other.
Art allows me to nurture the creative and intuitive part of my brain while teaching allows me to hold onto my love for structure and spending time with people, especially our youngest generation.
Balancing these two identities isn't always easy, but it is always worth it.
Hannah Sasse Art is how I'm honoring my identity as an artist, an identity that I’ve claimed since I was five. Painting brings me deep satisfaction and so does sharing my work with others.
I started sharing my work with others in middle school, when I was invited to my first art exhibition at a local theater in my hometown, Olympia, WA. In high school I won four art competition awards, one as part of the Washington State High School Art Show, where I was a finalist and received an award from the Association of Washington School Principals.
Even in high school, my artwork was deeply rooted in and inspired by nature. Capturing the natural world with my paintbrush, especially scenes of my home in the Pacific Northwest, has kept me connected with and allowed me to honor the beauty of Mother Nature.
Some of my many other passions include powerlifting, spending time with my family and cats, swimming and scuba diving in the ocean, and going on walks in nature.
